7th International Animated Film Festival ANIMATOR / 2014

July 11th – 17th, 2014 in Poznan

Seven is a number that stands for wholeness, completeness, perfection and the relationship of time and space. Animation is, of course, an art of time, but also to a large extent of space, especially when computer 3D techniques come to its aid. The seventh edition of the Animator has the ambition to be the fullest and most perfect edition of the festival in its history so far in terms of program diversity.

Women have always played a significant role in the history of Polish animated film. Unfortunately, this fact has rarely reached the public consciousness. An event of particular importance at this year's Animator, which I hope will restore many underrated or forgotten female artists to their rightful place, is a broad review of women's animation, combined with an international scientific conference organized by the Department of Film, Television and New Media at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

We are constantly expanding our international contacts. This year, we will widely present animation from China, still little known in Europe, but quickly conquering the world. Retrospectives of the masters will satisfy both amateurs of high-class film entertainment, as well as lovers of experiment or serious philosophical reflection. Bruno Bozzetto has been one of the wittiest animators of today for over fifty years. Pat O'Neill, a Californian artist belonging to the same generation, represents the experimental trend in cinema. His feature film Water and Power (1989) is one of the most magical works ever made. We have not forgotten the Polish master of philosophical grotesque, Mirosław Kijowicz, who died fifteen years ago, and if he had lived, he would have celebrated his eighty-fiveth anniversary this year.

We also want to shed light on cameraless animation, of which Steven Woloshen is a contemporary master.

The heart of the festival is, of course, competitions, which provide an opportunity to get acquainted with current trends in world animation. We are proud that this year, not only young artists who are just starting their careers, but also those recognized and awarded at other festivals, sent their works to our Festival. Of course, we don't forget about the children, there will also be some surprises. And finally, I invite you to the night cinema and numerous concerts combined with screenings, i.e. a point of the program that we have made the Animator's specialty and which our regular viewers are certainly waiting for.

Marcin Giżycki, Artistic Director of the Festival
